Levels Taught

I teach UK-based school students on selected weekday evenings and selected weekend times, in addition to supporting home-schooled students and international students before 2pm on selected weekdays.

I offer online lessons and a marking service for students studying at the following levels:

Writing a test

KS2 English, English SATs, 11+ and 13+ English

My KS2 English support involves helping students to secure curriculum knowledge and to love  literature through discovering and reading new texts together. For students sitting SATs, 11+ or 13+ I also offer sessions that build confidence through past papers and tips.

In the summer term before pupils start Year 7, I offer a series of lessons to support smooth transition to studying English at secondary school, introducing advanced skills early.

Open Book Flowers

KS3 English

For KS3 English students, I can design content to complement the student’s English work in school or target particular areas they wish to focus on.

For Year 9 students who will study AQA GCSE English Language in Year 10, I can introduce required skills and cover a suggested approach for answering each question early to support a smooth transition between KS3 and KS4, giving students a head start. I also support preparation for KS4 essay writing using the texts studied in Year 9.

Students Taking Exams

KS4 English: GCSE English Language and Literature

At KS4, my specialism is AQA GCSE English Language and Literature. I teach the following texts on the AQA syllabus: 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Macbeth', 'A Christmas Carol', 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde', 'An Inspector Calls', 'Blood Brothers', 'Lord of the Flies', Power and Conflict Poetry, Love and Relationships Poetry, Worlds and Lives Poetry and Unseen Poetry.

Lessons offer a personalised yet systematic approach through encouraging pupils to reflect on each area of the course with a Progress Tracker that is used to guide future lessons and independent study. We target the areas the student needs to focus on and build a programme in line with mock exams or long-term goals.

I also welcome enquiries from international students studying alternative GCSE English qualifications. Please contact me to discuss things further.

GCSE English Crash Courses

GCSE students wanting to understand how to approach AQA GCSE English Language in just 1 day can enrol on a Crash Course Day that walks them through both English Language papers. These sessions are for up to 4 students and run on selected weekends and half term days throughout the year. They include 8 hours of teaching on 1 day and individualised marking of 4 English Language papers after the day. They are the most affordable type of online lesson, providing excellent value.

Which Option is Best for Me?

1:1 weekly or fortnightly lessons

  • Available for KS2, SATs, 11+, 13+, KS3 and GCSE English students.

  • Choose between a weekly or fortnightly slot running throughout the year.

  • Best for students who want a fully personalised learning experience tailored to their preferences, pace and goals and highly individualised feedback about their work. This is a desirable option for SEND students or those with special requirements who feel their needs would not be as well met in a group or at the faster pace of a Crash Course Day. This option is best for families wanting to secure a permanent slot for the current academic year.

Group weekly lessons for KS2, KS3 or GCSE English

  • Learn in a group of up to 4 students studying the same topics at KS2 or KS3 or the same course and texts at GCSE.

  • This collaborative experience allows pupils to learn from each other and is a more affordable alternative to 1:1.

  • Best for students who would like to try tutoring with their friends or to meet new people to share their learning journey with. This option works well for families wanting to secure a permanent slot for the current academic year.

AQA GCSE English Language and Literature weekly Booster Courses

  • Learn 1:1 or in a group of up to 4 students studying the same texts at GCSE for a up to 12 lessons.

  • Split your lessons over key areas in AQA English Language and AQA English Literature.

  • Learn what is required of you for different questions, do mock papers and fill in gaps in knowledge.

  • Best for students who want to try tutoring without committing to a regular slot throughout the year or those seeking a more affordable option, as it is the most affordable regular slot. Great for students who want an overview of the GCSE or people looking to just target a few key areas.

AQA GCSE English Language Crash Course Day

  • Learn in a group of up to 4 students over one intensive day with 8 hours of teaching on a selected weekend or half term day.

  • Enhance your understanding of what is required for each question, benefit from advice from examiners' reports, visualise success at various grades through real exam model answers, practise answering the questions during the day and share work with peers.

  • After the day, benefit from time at home to complete 4 English Language papers on 2 occasions, with individualised feedback after each set of 2 to help you apply what you learnt on the day and address targets from the first set of marking.

  • Best for students wanting a quick overview of how to approach the entire English Language exam or those who are new to tutoring and want to try it. This is the most affordable option offered.

  • Please note that due to the intensive nature of the Crash Day, it may not be as suitable for pupils who find it harder to learn at a faster pace or those who need longer breaks in between content.

UK Daytime Lessons

  • I offer lessons in the daytime before 2pm Monday-Thursday to support home-schooled KS3 or KS4 students or international students.

  • Please get in contact to discuss your exact curriculum requirements.

Marking Service

  • The marking service is for students requiring detailed and personalised feedback on written work or mock assessments completed outside of lessons. This is offered at all levels, with various packages available including regular marking time where extra homework is set at intervals or a mock exam marking time designed to mimic school assessments and final exams.

  • This service is open to students who already take lessons and those who just want work marked.

  • Best for pupils who want to complete additional homework to maximise independent study time and who want quality feedback to measure their progress.

What do my Lessons Look Like?

Personalised teaching underpins my approach to tutoring so the exact elements of a lesson and the way that it's taught will depend on what suits each student best. However, to give you an insight into what a lesson might look like, I've put together this short guide:

KS2 English

Lessons start by reviewing homework the student has completed before engaging with 1-2 main activities, like reading together, reading comprehension or writing before playing a word game and reviewing key lesson points. For students studying SATs, 11+ or 13+, the main activity would usually be reviewing exam strategy and completing mock papers and the final activity might include a spelling challenge or vocabulary boost.

KS3 English

Lessons start by reviewing homework the student has completed before engaging with 1-2 main activities such as analysis of literary texts or writing essays, reading comprehension, creative or persuasive writing before a final activity such as playing a word game, undertaking a spelling or vocabulary challenge or reading together. The lesson ends by reviewing key lesson points.

KS4 English

I teach students who study English Language, English Literature or both; when both are studied, we alternate lessons between them.

When I first teach students English Language, we spend 1 lesson each on questions 2-5 on each paper and cover what the question requires, how to structure an answer, insights from examiners' reports, tips and then apply this to completing an answer together which is finished as homework. Subsequent Language lessons can be adapted to target key questions again and use model answers to understand next steps.

For Literature, a lesson might focus on a key aspect of content with one text, such as recapping the plot, making character summaries, annotating texts, understanding context and linking it to the text, making banks of key quotes that are memorised and annotated, creating essay plans, understanding what a strong essay should contain and how to structure it, learning from examiner reports, tips and critiquing model exam answers.

Short activities that can be built into lessons include recalling quotes, exploding quotes, quick-fire essay plans and linking context to the text. Lessons usually start by reviewing homework and checking in with independent study before engaging with a starter and 1-2 main tasks. Lessons end by reviewing key points.
